In 1953, a passion for
photography lured newly
qualified chemist Padraig
Kennelly away from the
safe haven of the family
pharmacy business in
Tralee, County Kerry on
Ireland's south west coast.
Despite the country's fragile
economic state, the
populous enjoyed life and
Kennelly's mission was to
capture this - firstly in still
photography and later as
one of Ireland's first
freelance 'stringer'
cameramen. He married
Joan in 1956 and together
they photographed breaking
news, social events and
produced a nationwide line
of black and white real
photo postcards of towns,
villages and scenic
locations.
The Kennelly Archive aims
to digitally capture the work
of the Kennellys from a
carefully filed archive of
negatives over a fifty year
period. During 2009 the
first of these photographs -
many never seen before -
will become available at
kennellyarchive.com.
